The Menstrual Cup Oracle: Our 3-Step Fit Philosophy

or How to Select the Correct Size

Choosing a menstrual cup isn’t about ticking “S, M or L”. It’s about finding a comfortable fit that suits your anatomy, lifestyle and flow. Follow our three-step method below.

1. Cervix Height

The key to comfort.

Forget age or height — the real secret is matching the cup’s length to your cervix height. A cup that’s too long can press and cause discomfort; one that’s too short can be hard to remove.

Why it matters: Matching length prevents pressure and makes removal straightforward.

How to measure it (30 seconds): Wash your hands. Insert a clean finger and feel for the cervix — it feels like the tip of your nose. If you can touch it at the first knuckle it’s low; the middle knuckle is medium; if you need your full fingertip it’s high. Choose a shorter cup for a low cervix, a standard length for medium, and a longer cup for a high cervix.

2. Flow Rate

Match capacity to your menstrual rhythm.

Cup capacity is measured in millilitres. Think of it like choosing bottle size: pick what suits how much you bleed and how often you want to empty it.

Light to moderate flow: Smaller cups (good for those who empty often or prefer a barely-there feel).

Medium to heavy flow: Medium capacity cups balance comfort and protection.

Heavy flow or overnight: Larger capacity cups (30 ml or more) are handy for longer wear and fewer emptyings. Tip: one regular tampon ≈ 5 ml — use that to estimate your flow.

3. Pelvic Floor Tone

Firmness matters as much as size.

Your pelvic floor muscles affect how a cup opens and stays put. Lifestyle and life events change muscle tone.

Stronger pelvic floor (yoga, Pilates, high-impact sports): A firmer cup helps it open and seal properly.

Softer pelvic floor (vaginal birth, less muscle tone): A more flexible cup feels gentler and reduces pressure.

    Unsure: A medium-firmness cup is a sensible all-round choice.

In summary

Step 1: Start with cervix height — it determines the cup length you need.

Step 2: Choose capacity based on your flow — match millilitres to real life.

Step 3: Pick firmness to suit your pelvic floor tone — lifestyle and childbirth matter.

Follow these three steps and you’ll move beyond S/M/L to a fit that’s genuinely tailored to you.

Your First Three Cycles: An Honest Adaptation Diary

We believe in honesty over hype.

Transitioning to a reusable product isn’t a one-day miracle; it’s a short learning journey. Here’s what to expect:

Cycle 1: Getting used to it.

What happens: You’re learning the folds, the angles, and your anatomy.

Expect: A few leaks while you perfect your technique — totally normal.

Cycle 2: Confidence builds.

What happens: Insertion becomes second nature.

You’ll notice: How light your bag feels without backups or constant changes.

Cycle 3: Complete freedom.

What happens: You’ll forget it’s even there.

Bonus: You might even catch yourself wondering how disposable products ever felt “normal.”

By the third cycle, comfort, convenience, and sustainability merge into one seamless experience — a quiet revolution, one period at a time.

Leak Detective: 3 Common Reasons for Leaks

If you’ve ever experienced a leak and thought, “Maybe this cup just doesn’t work for me,” take a deep breath — it’s almost never the cup’s fault. Leaks are usually tiny signals from your body (or your technique) that something needs a simple tweak. Here’s how to decode them like a pro.

1. Incomplete Cup Opening

  • Clue: You might feel a crumpled area or hear a faint “whistle” of air escaping when the cup is inserted.
  • Solution: Run a clean finger along the cup’s base. If you feel a dent, gently rotate the cup 360° by the stem or pinch the base slightly to help it unfold. Try different folds (the “punch-down” or “7” fold) — a simple change often makes it pop open reliably.

2. Incorrect Insertion Angle

  • Clue: You feel pressure or discomfort, or the cup seems to “sit too low.”
  • Solution: Remember the vaginal canal tilts slightly backward toward the tailbone. When inserting, aim backward (not straight up). After insertion, check that the stem points slightly toward your back rather than directly down — small angle adjustments often stop leaks instantly.

3. Overfilling

  • Clue: You notice sudden spotting or a small leak after several hours of clean wear.
  • Solution: Track your flow for a cycle or two. If your cup fills quickly, empty it more frequently (for example every 4–6 hours instead of 8–10), or consider a higher-capacity model designed for heavier flows.

Final Tip

Small leaks don’t mean failure — they mean feedback. Each body has its own rhythm and fit. Once you understand why a leak is happening, you can fine-tune your technique and enjoy leak-free comfort for years.

I may never use pads again

After having my tubes tied my periods became much heavier than normal. I was having issues with pads, they could support my flow but unfortunately if they shift you end up a mess. And I had a bad experience with tampons so I wanted to avoid those. I decided to try out a menstrual cup.

I was weary as first since inserting anything makes me nervous but this was very easy to insert. When I first inserted it I did feel it and it was a little uncomfortable but after some adjusting I managed to get it positioned as it should be and I no longer felt a thing. It was like I was wearing nothing.

I had no leaks while using the menstrual cup, but I didn't use it during my heaviest flow as when it arrived my period was already at the moderate flow phase. But based on how well it handled my moderate flow I can imagine this will be perfect for my heavy flow as well.

I can't believe how easy these are to use and how comfortable they are. Such a great alternative to pads and tampons. I love this cup.

    This is a great design

Many years ago I had tried an original version of a menstrual cup and had a really hard time getting it to seal and inserting/removing it. I decided to give this one a try and I was very happy with the results. The biggest game changer is the little loop at the end of it which makes removal so much easier. After one use I figured out how to get it to seal without any issues. It is pretty unnoticeable and comfortable when it's inserted which is a plus
